Abstract
The Republic of Korea is located in the Far East, with an area of about 100,000 sqare
kilometers and with a population of about 43 million. It has a history of about 5,000
years.
The First description on the symptomatology of a probable leprosy lesion is in
Hyang-Yak-Gu-Gub Bang written in 1251. And the description of a definitive leprosy
lesion can be found in Hyang-Jip Sung-Bang published in 1433.
The main policy of leprosy control in Korea has been to build a leprosy-free welfare
state by eradicating all the infection sources, thus preventing the spread of leprosy. And
further more, the victims of Hansen¡¯s Disease should be healed and rehabilitated with
fall manship so to become common citizens of the country They can be achieved
through the principle efforts of the government and N. G. O. to treat the patients as
early as possible and care for their social and physical handicaps
The most important source of infection is thought to be the unidentified, untreated
patients and they can be achieved by treating known registered cases extensively so to
eliminate source of infection(elimination of index cases), by promoting voluntary
treatment through better understanding of leprosy and occasionally through contact
surveys, if necessary.
Looking into the present status of leprosy control in Korea, there are about 1,500
closely-monitored patients who will cause little problem in the spread of leprosy with
appropriate management Currently public health networks such as 260 regional public
health centers are actively involved in new-case dentification and treatment of registered
patients in cooperation with such units as mobile clinics, short-term in-patient clinics
and OPD¡¯s operated by the government and N.G.O¡¯s.
Korean Leprosy Control Association a governmental supported N.S.O. and
KALSO(Korean Association for Leprosy Service Organization), which holds 18
organization such as British Leprosy Mission, American Leprosy Mission, Lew Institute
for Biomedical Research and others. They are actively participating leprosy control work
with governmental unit or independently with hospital, clinics and mobile units
